On Monday Feb 6, 2017, Neil Johnson received the USTA Service Award for Grassroots Junior Tennis at the Straus ClubHouse/UCLA. This award recognizes the years of dedication and effort Neil has contributed to junior tennis with his SSV Tennis Program. SSV Tennis is ability-based weekly competition in San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles. Player's tennis ability and level are based on Neil's SSV Tennis Rating, patented in 1973.

Among Neil's grassroots programs, in 1975, he created Tennis Explorers, an official Boy Scouts of America organization for tennis. Weekly meetings for playing tennis on make-shift courts at a local church were very popular for neighborhood teens. Neil arranged tennis opportunities for juniors that went BEYOND playing, like being ball boys at the 1975 US OPEN at Forest Hills.

With over 50 years of 'keeping kids in the game', Neil continues to have a positive impact on juniors, making tennis fun and accessible to thousands of kids in Southern California.

What Do We Want All USTA Organization Members To
Know In Southern California At Year-End 2014?
Serve, Stroke & Volley (SSV)

If your organization is looking for a way to help your players find skill-level based competition to promote interest, improvement and retention, I recommend that you look at SSVTENNIS.COM or contact Neil Johnson, 760.781.5182, the founder of SSV. SSV can help youth or adult players find the right level of competition to have meaningful match play. SSV can also be used by teaching pros to pinpoint player improvement areas in control, power and mobility. This analysis can lead to private and group lessons, and workout groups.

SSV is an on-court skill test that can also be used as an individual or team competition format.

Bruce Hunt
SCTA Executive Director
An SSV test takes between 10-15 minutes per player, so a whole team can be scored in the time of a singles match. SSV can help organizations match players who are looking for hitting partners and it is gender and age neutral. Give Neil a call if SSV sounds like it could provide a positive activity for your site.
